Mike Treleaven slams South Hams District Council proposals to include war pensions in benefit calculations

12 Jan 2005

Proposals by South Hams District Council to stop the scheme whereby War Disablement Pensions and War Widows/Widowers pensions are excluded from benefit calculations were described as hard hearted and mean by Totnes Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson, Mike Treleaven.

'Money saving schemes being devised by the Conservative run council have now reached a new low' said Mike Treleaven ' We are talking here about people who have been disabled fighting for their country and the dependents of those killed in the service of their country. Surely we should be giving these heroes every support and not take away vital sources of income. At a time when we are daily reminded of the dangers facing our forces as they cope with the situation in Iraq it is particularly crass and insensitive to talk about removing benefits.'
