High rates of second home ownership have an adverse effect on rural communities. They leave small towns and villages like ghost towns outside of weekends and holidays, and push up house prices beyond the means of local residents.
Led by Cllr Julian Brazil, the Lib Dem group at SHDC are calling for the Government to allow councils to take measures to reduce second home ownership.
Cllr Brazil proposes two measures; the first allowing for up to 200% council tax on 2nd homes and the second calling for the government to stop paying Covid grants to 2nd home owners.
