LIBERAL DEMOCRATS - THE REAL OPPOSITION
The Liberal Democrats today launched their strategy for the General Election and outlined the key campaigning themes and policy pledges.
Mike Treleaven, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Totnes Constituency said:
'The people of the Totnes Constituency now see that the Liberal Democrats are the Real Opposition. On so many issues it is the Liberal Democrats who have challenged the Government and asked the critical questions whilst the Conservatives have just lined up with Labour'
'The Liberal Democrats are the only Party to oppose Identity Cards although the Conservatives are split down the middle. Our own M.P. Anthony Steen declined to vote against the proposals despite believing them to be flawed'
'The Liberal Democrats were the only major party to oppose the war in Iraq. In the House of Commons (March 2003) the Liberal Democrats were united in voting against the war, whilst only 3 Conservatives opposed the use of British troops.'
'Many pensioners and low wage earners in the Totnes Constituency are hit by the unfair Council Tax. The Conservatives introduced this unfair and regressive tax and have no plans to replace it. Liberal Democrat proposals for a Local Income Tax based on people's ability to pay are fair and would benefit thousands of people in this area.'
'People need to feel safe and secure and the Liberal Democrat tough liberal approach to crime will put 10,000 more police on the streets, cut re-offending rates and get to grips with the causes of crime'
'Our plans for free personal care for the elderly, equal pensions for men and women, increased pensions for those over 75 and an end to demeaning means testing will help thousands of pensioners in the constituency.
'Being the real opposition to the Labour Government has meant taking the tough choices necessary to present credible and costed policies. We want a strong, vibrant economy for Britain so we can set out a clear and affordable alternative programme for Government - a programme based on freedom, fairness and trust'
