Letter to WMN & Gazette - Save Slapton line

22 Mar 2004

Dear Editor,

The recent decision by English Nature to withdraw support for continued repairs to the Slapton Line road is a body blow for the whole area. It is essential for the social and economic well being of the communities that live between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth that the road is kept open. The livelihoods and well being of thousands of people would be seriously affected - it is not long ago that 10,000 people signed a petition to keep the road open.

And what of the emergency services? It is not uncommon, for example, for an ambulance from Dartmouth to be called to the coastal villages on the Kingsbridge side of Slapton, or one from Kingsbridge to the Dartmouth side.

It is not even as if the site would remain as it is. Once nature is allowed to take its course the freshwater lea will become a salt water lake and the nature of the area changed for ever.

I would urge everyone to campaign as hard to change this ill thought out decision. Write to English nature, write to your M.P. and support the campaign to save the Slapton Line road.

Yours sincerely,

Mike Treleaven
