GOOD NEWS FROM SHDC ON CLIMATE CHANGE

24 Jan 2020

Liberal Democrat and Green councillors plus one Independent councillor on South Hams District Council joined forces to propose an amendment to the proposed 2020/21 Budget that called for funds to be allocated for climate change projects.

The Lib Dem and Green councillors took the view that the current proposed budget ignored the key issue of climate change. There was nothing proposed to back up the Climate Change Action Plan being produced by SHDC other than to appoint a climate change officer who will spend half of his/her time with West Devon and without a budget.

At a meeting at Follaton House on the 23rd of January Cllr John Birch, along with the support of Lib Dem and Green councillors, proposed that a fund of £400,000 be set up for emergency climate change projects in South Hams in order to give effect to the action plan being produced by the Council. The proposal was carried and now goes for final approval by the Executive and Full Council

It is part of the accepted proposal that part of the £400,000 be open to bids from community groups with proposals for climate change projects.
