The first modern homes for local families in 30 years are being built by Lib Dem Teignbridge District Council.
Work is starting on the first homes directly funded by the council in three decades. Councillor Martin Wrigley, responsible for housing at Teignbridge council, is driving forward plans for new genuinely affordable homes locally.
The new homes at Teignbridge are at East Street, Newton Abbot, following on from Drake Road, Newton Abbot (to be completed in the summer).
Martin Wrigley, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Dawlish North East said:
"Too often, new houses are beyond the reach of our local sons and daughters but by building council homes we will help many local families. With new house prices so high, too many local people are left out.
"These include the men and women who work in the NHS and caring services, the blue light emergency services, key workers and other jobs which are essential in our communities. Our communities deserve quality housing to meet their needs, and I am proud Teignbridge District Council is working hard to deliver it."
