An open letter to the constituency from Dr Sarah Wollaston

November 24, 2019 12:40 PM
By Dr Sarah Wollaston
I have been proud to represent the people of the Totnes constituency since 2010 and to be standing again as the Liberal Democrat for re-election on 12 December.

Over the last two years, many of you have written to tell me that the Conservative Party no longer represents your views and values. I agree, and this was a key reason for me leaving the Party. It is the Liberal Democrats who best represent the open-hearted, One Nation values that drew me into politics.

I could no longer support a government intent on driving Brexit through despite the devastating effect it will have on the NHS, our international relations, economy and the United Kingdom. I am relieved not to be in a party that ejected 21 of its own distinguished and moderate members like Ken Clarke.
This election offers the last chance of stopping Brexit. It is critical to ending the chaos that has been inflicted on our country by the divisive and misleading 2016 referendum campaign. The Johnson deal won't 'get Brexit done', just fire the starting pistol on years of further wrangling.

The Lib Dems are the only Party in this constituency with a clear and unequivocal commitment to scrap Brexit. Only then will our country be able to focus on the future of the NHS, social care, the climate emergency, education and addressing inequality. These are the real issues that so many of us are deeply concerned about.
If you have spent time in hospital recently or are caring for someone who is elderly or vulnerable, you will know that the NHS and social care are at breaking point. With my experience as an NHS doctor behind me, I have put a great deal of energy over the last nine years in Parliament to holding the government and NHS leaders to account.
Experience tells me that the Conservatives cannot be trusted on their glossy election promises. Instead, we should judge them on their record of failing to protect public services and widening inequalities in our country.

The Liberal Democrats will do better. Visit us on social media (include links here) for policy updates. We will stop Brexit and use the £50 billion 'remain bonus' to boost our nation's health and social care. We will train 20,000 more teachers, insulate all low-income homes by 2025 and give every adult a lifetime sum of £10,000 to train and improve their job prospects. We believe that we are most united when we tackle inequality and value wellbeing.
We must bring people together for the good of the planet and all our people. With this in mind, I am very grateful to the Green Party who have taken the difficult decision to step aside for this election so that there is a single clear Remain in the EU choice in the Totnes Constituency. Elsewhere the Lib Dems have stepped aside as part of a national agreement in constituencies like Stroud, Exeter and Bristol West.

Far from working together in the national interest, the Conservatives' record on public services shows that we can't trust them. Nor can we trust Boris Johnson who has refused to publish the impact of his Brexit deal, buried the important report on Russian interference in British politics and has continually side-stepped allegations about his personal conduct.
I believe the challenges that our country faces are immense but they can be overcome if we pull together. Join the movement to deliver a brighter future for South Devon by voting Liberal Democrat on 12 December.
